KEPCO research institute's Gochang testing center Taihan Cable & Solution said on Monday that it had completed the development of a 500-kV current cross-linked polyethylene extra-high voltage DC (XLPE HVDC) land cable system and secured an internationally recognized certification.
According to the company, 500 kV is the highest voltage among currently available XLPE HDVC cable systems developed thus far.
Taihan is the first in Korea and the second in the world after Japan to be given internationally recognized certification for its cables from KEMA Laboratories in the Netherlands.
HVDC is considered a key technology for long-distance large-scale power transmission as it has less power loss than alternating current (AC) and has no restrictions on transmission distance. In particular, HVDC insulated with XLPE boasts excellent properties in insulation, heat resistance and durability.
Hyung-gyun Na, president of Taihan Cable & Solution, said, "It is very encouraging to have our HVDC technology recognized at a time when the global demand for long-distance power transmission and the dissemination of new and renewable energy sources is rising rapidly."
