LG Uplus tests energy efficiency tech for 6G network

South Korea’s LG Uplus Corp. said on Tuesday it tested the All-Photonic Transport Network, a key technology designed to reduce power consumption in the 6G era.

The demonstration, conducted in collaboration with global telecom equipment providers Infinera Corp. and Juniper Networks, aims to minimize conversions between electrical and optical signals to significantly lower energy usage.

This technology not only reduces the power required for data transmission but also efficiently manages the increasing network traffic anticipated in the 6G era.

The core innovation lies in reducing energy-intensive signal conversions and developing network architectures using all-photonic device components.

LG Uplus emphasized that the test highlights its commitment to building sustainable 6G networks.

The telecom operator is also advancing other 6G-related technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), open networks and RAN, and network APIs.

LG Uplus plans to showcase its 6G research achievements at the 2024 Korea Radio Wave Industry Expo, scheduled at COEX in Seoul on Nov. 20.
